The Lumia 930 is the first flagship Nokia device to be unveiled since the company was absorbed by tech behemoth Microsoft. The typically colourful phone is a distinctive addition to the Nokia lineup and arrives running the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, Windows Phone 8.1. It goes on sale 17 July in the UK, and if you buy it within the first two weeks you will get a portable wireless charger, a portable wireless speaker and a £20 app voucher. As well as being available in black, neon green and bright orange, you will also able to get your hands on an exclusive white version if you buy the 930 from Phones4U.
Design and screen Nokia's Lumias have always set themselves apart from other smartphones with their colourful shells and bright, tiled interfaces. But the Lumia 930 sports undoubtedly the most polished look we've seen yet. Our review unit had a matte, rounded luminous green back that felt extremely smooth in the hand. The rectangular chassis has a 9.8mm-thick aluminium rim running around the outside, which gives it a dash more finesse than previous Lumias. It's neither particularly slim nor light, weighing in at 167g, but the upside of this is that it feels reassuringly expensive and solid -- we have no issues with build quality whatsoever. The phone is such a size that we were just about able to operate it with one slightly smaller than average hand. UEnlargeKatie Collins Running down the right-hand side of the phone are the volume, power and dedicated camera shutter buttons (in that order) and while being very discreet, they can be fiddly to grapple with at times. As well as being bright and bold, the 5-inch screen has a real sense of depth thanks to the fact the whole front of the phone is covered by a layer of convex Corning Gorilla glass. It's nice and sharp too, with a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels, meaning it has an overall resolution of 441 pixels per inch. Processor and features For a Windows Phone device, the Lumia 930 has powerful innards that mean it can tackle pretty much any task you throw its way with aplomb. Under the bonnet you'll find a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, which will see you nipping through Six-Guns and use Microsoft's new free video-editing app Video Tuner without a single hitch. With an AnTuTu benchmark score of 26,500, the phone outperforms many mid-range Android devices, which run more demanding software -- although it's not a patch on the flagship Android smartphones, most of which now score over 30,000 on the same test. With all the benefits of Windows 8.1 the 930 really is a pleasure to use with its cool, if slightly dizzying floating backgrounds and extra row of tiles. The Word Flow keyboard works seamlessly, which is excellent news for typo-prone smartphone users out there. Microsoft's voice assistant Cortana is lurking in the phone somewhere, but hasn't landed in the UK just yet -- we can't wait to try it out and give it a go when it does. Regrettably, the Windows Phone Store is still lacking. Even though it now has many more key apps than it has ever had before -- and that is growing every day -- we still found there were apps that we'd use everyday on an Android or iOS device, which were either missing important features or missing completely. Windows Phone has demonstrated remarkable growth, but now that the conversation surrounding wearables and home automation are heating up, it faces brand new challenges. The 930 has a unibody chassis with no microSD slot, which means you'll have to make do with the 32GB of in-built memory and 7GB free OneDrive cloud storage. Despite having a 2,420mAh battery tucked inside it, we found that the Lumia 930 didn't have the level of stamina we'd expect. Battery seemed to last fairly well for most of the day, but would suddenly drop off very quickly. Fortunately, having a wireless charging pad on the office desk all day meant that this did not take its toll on evening plans. It would be a shame to own this phone and not take advantage of the wireless charging capabilities. The battery saver feature also allows you to see which apps are draining the 930's juice most quickly and stop them from running in The Lumia 930's 20-megapixel camera takes natural, well-balanced photos with plenty of detail. In our sample photo of an ice cream van we spotted on the streets of London you can make out the grooves on the ice cream cones when zoomed in, despite the shot being taken from some distance. In our shots of the London skyline, there's no evidence of overexposure and the phone copes well with light, clouds, sunshine and shadow. Close-up shots are bright and crisp and are fun to play with using the Nokia Refocus app -- just one of several tools that makes photography on Nokia phones a fun and rewarding experience.

Microsoft set to lay off 1,800 staff

Update: 7/17/14 - As reports suggested, the layoffs at Microsoft are real and the largest in company history. Up to 18,000 jobs will be cut, with most of the pink slips going out over the course of the next six months. More than half of the cuts are coming from the Stephen Elop’s devices group. /end update Microsoft is poised to layoff thousands of employees according to a report from Bloomberg, in an effort to remove redundancies from the tech giant. It will be the largest round of layoffs since 2009. While many of the cuts will be from the recently acquired Nokia handset division—30,000 jobs were added as a result of the $7 billion deal—marketing jobs in other divisions such as Xbox may also take a hit, according to the sources. The job cuts are part of CEO Satya Nadella’s sweeping changes to the company, as he transitions away from former CEO Steve Ballmer’s vision of a “devices and services” company toward a “mobile-first and cloud-first” productivity firm. The Nokia acquisition added 30,000 jobs, swelling Microsoft’s employee count to 127,104 as of June 5th. The upcoming cuts are likely to top the 2009 culling, making this the largest round of layoffs in Microsoft history. I’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment on this report and will update this post accordingly with any response.

An indestructible ball

Imagine this scene in your neighborhood: A group of kids plays a pickup soccer game. They kick around the ball in the street or maybe in someone's backyard. The ball bounces from child to child, off of feet, knees, heads. Now, imagine that same scene in a war zone. In a landscape peppered with barbed wire, broken glass and thorny brush, that same soccer ball has a lifespan of about one hour. It was this realization that led Tim Jahnigen, a former lyricist and chef, to take action. In 2006 while watching a news story on Darfur, Tim noticed children kicking around a ball of trash with a string and recognized a need for a ball that could withstand harsh conditions during play. Tim mentioned his idea to a well-known friend from his time in the music business, Sting, who urged him to pursue the idea and provided initial funding and support. In 2010, Tim and his wife, Lisa Tarver, launched One World Futbol Project, an organization that hopes to foster the healing power of play by producing nearly indestructible soccer balls for disadvantaged communities. Lisa says research continues to show that play is one of the few forms of activity that actually helps people recover from traumatic situations. "So when children are in refugee camps or recovering from natural disasters, the opportunity for play is vital to that community's recovery," she explains. One World Futbol Project operates on the "buy one, give one" model, similar to other mission-driven companies such as Toms shoes and Warby Parker. Buyers can purchase two balls for $39.95, which covers one for themselves and one to be donated to a community in need. To date, the organization has supplied over 850,000 balls, but distribution doesn't come without challenges. Because the balls cannot be deflated, they are significantly more expensive and difficult to ship than traditional soccer balls. Thief Forgets To Log Off Facebook After Burglarizing Home

A Minnesota man is in jail because he logged on to Facebook. Police say 26-year-old Nicholas Wig checked his profile from a home he broke into, and then he didn’t log off. It happened June 19 in South St. Paul. “World’s dumbest criminal,” the homeowner James Wood said. “I don’t know.” Wood had come home to find his house ransacked. His credit cards, cash and watch were all gone. In their place, the thief had left a pair of Nike tennis shoes, jeans and a belt, that were all wet. Wood said it had been raining outside. “I started to panic,” he said. “But then I noticed he had pulled up his Facebook profile.” Wood posted to Facebook using Wig’s profile, saying Wig had burglarized his home. He even shared his phone number to see if someone would call with information. Wig texted him later that day. “I replied you left a few things at my house last night, how can I get them back to you,” Wood said. Wig agreed to meet with Wood later that night. Wood believes Wig was under the impression he would give him back some of his clothes he had left at his home in exchange for a recycled cell phone Wig had stolen. Wood, at his friend’s house, left for home. On his way back to his house he saw and recognized Wig, from his Facebook profile, walking on the street. He immediately called police. “I’ve never seen this before,” Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said. “It’s a pretty unusual case, might even make the late night television shows in terms of not being too bright.” Wig was wearing Wood’s watch when he found him. Police arrested him at the scene. He could face up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines if convicted

Whatsapp still out of windows store

There is no denying that WhatsApp is a popular messaging service. In areas of the world where SMS and MMS are expensive, WhatsApp fills the void with a cheaper and likely better solution. Recently, WhatsApp was down momentarily, but the service returned back to normal within a few hours. However, the big concern is the Windows Phone app. Not too long ago, WhatsApp was taken down from the Windows Phone store due to technical issues with the app. This app is still unavailable as of May 26th. Microsoft is working alongside WhatsApp to fix a notification bug that has been plauging the app, hence its removal from the Store until the issue has been fixed. No ETA was given as to when the app will return back to the Windows Phone Store. It is currently Memorial Day in the United States, and this holiday weekend might just slow things down a bit too. For those of you who happened to time it wrong and uninstall the app right before it was pulled from the Store, you are going to have to keep waiting until it becomes available again. WhatsApp has been removed from the Windows Phone store due to technical issues found when the app is used on Windows Phone 8.1.

Developers designing a beta version of the app on the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system apparently found that it didn’t run as planned, and - in some cases - didn’t work at all.

Even though the app still works on Windows Phone 8, it has been completely removed from the store. Any attempts to find it return an error.

Rumours have already begun to circulate the app may have been withdrawn due to an impending update for the incoming Windows Phone OS.

A statement to Windows Phone Central read:  “Unfortunately due to technical issues, we have chosen to un-publish WhatsApp Messenger on the Windows Phone platform.

"We are working closely with Microsoft to resolve the issues and hope to return to the store shortly. We apologise to our users for the temporary inconvenience.”

Those who already have the app installed shouldn’t worry, however, as it will continue to work as normal. WhatsApp still lists Windows Phone as a supported platform on its website, but the link directs to the currently inactive download page.

WhatsApp was bought up by Facebook in February 2014 in a deal worth $19 billion (£11 billion). Founder Jan Koum dismissed fears following the acquisition that users of the messaging platform would be prone to snooping: “If partnering with Facebook meant that we had to change our values, we wouldn’t have done it,” he said

Online marketplace eBay is forcing users to change their passwords after a cyber-attack compromised its systems.

The US firm said a database had been hacked between late February and early March, and had contained encrypted passwords and other non-financial data. The company added that it had no evidence of there being unauthorised activity on its members' accounts. However, it said that changing the passwords was "best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users". The California-based company has 128 million active users and accounted for $212bn (£126bn) worth of commerce on its various marketplaces and other services in 2013. It said it would be contacting users to alert them of the issue via email, its website, adverts and social media. A spokesman added that the firm's engineers were in the process of rolling out a feature that would oblige members to choose new passwords when they next logged in, which should be live in each of the countries eBay operated in by the end of the day. Stolen credentials A post on eBay's corporate sitesaid that cyber-attackers accessed the information after obtaining "a small number of employee log-in credentials", allowing them to access its systems - something it only became aware of a fortnight ago. "The database... included eBay customers' name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth," it said. "However, the database did not contain financial information or other confidential personal information. "Extensive forensics subsequently identified the compromised eBay database, resulting in the company's announcement today." Although the firm also owns the PayPal money transfer service, it said that the division's data was stored separately, encrypted and that there was no evidence that it had been accessed. It added that any members who used the same login details used on eBay for other sites should also update them. EBay has not provided any information about the kind of encryption it used. One expert said there was still a concern that the hackers might be able to make use of their haul. "We all know that given enough time hackers can crack some encrypted password files," said Alan Woodward, an independent security consultant. "The slightly worrying aspect of this is that the hackers have a nice neat list of personal information, which can be used to steal identities or even help them get around other systems though password reset scams."

Villarreal fans threw things at him once he got near them — one of those items being a banana. When Alves spotted it laying on the pitch, he casually picked it up, peeled it, took a big bite, tossed the peel aside and took his corner kick. As cool as can be. Two minutes later, Villarreal scored another own goal to make it 2-2 and Lionel Messi came through with a goal in the 83rd minute to give Barca a 3-2 that will undoubtedly be dedicated to Tito Vilanova. Sadly, racist abuse — including bananas and monkey sounds — has become old hat to Dani Alves. In January of last year, he said, "I go through this constantly in all the grounds I go to. It is a shame, as fans can like you or not, and there can be heated moments within games, but the crowd should just support their own team. [...] I have been here [in Spain] for ten years and since the first year this kind of thing has happened. There are worse grounds [than the Bernabeu]. It happens all over Spain. I lived through it at Sevilla. Until action is taken, nothing will be fixed." Following the Villarreal match, Alves expanded on his previous comments with an explanation of his personal approach to racism in the absence of institutional change. David Moyes has agreed to Man United pay off term

David Moyes has reached agreement with Manchester United over the size of his pay-off, England’s League Managers’ Association announced Friday. United sacked Moyes on Tuesday, just 10 months into the Scot’s six-year contract. The past few days have seen seen Moyes and LMA representatives holding talks with faltering Premier League champions United and on Friday the LMA said terms had been agreed.

“The League Managers Association and Manchester United are pleased to confirm that terms of settlement have been agreed between the Club and David Moyes in respect of the termination of his employment,” the LMA said in a statement. “A settlement agreement is in the process of being finalised. No further comment will be made in relation to this issue.”

The LMA statement did not say how much Moyes, the man retired former United manager Alex Ferguson wanted to replace him after he stood down at the end of last season, would be paid as part of his severance deal. Following Moyes’s sacking, there were widespread reports in the British media that his pay-off would be capped at less than £5 million out of his £30 million deal ($50m, 36m euros). It was reported that he had lost out on a larger compensation package through an ‘ejector seat’ clause in his contract, limiting his money to 12 months’ salary if the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, something that was confirmed after United’s 2-0 defeat by Everton. United are currently seventh in the table and, having been knocked out of both domestic cups and the Champions League, will endure a trophy-less season. This campaign will see United record their worst points total in the Premier League era and their highest number of home defeats since 1978 — including 3-0 drubbings by bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Microsoft acquires Nokia devices, services business

Microsoft Corp has announced it has completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices which allows the two companies to come together as one to deliver a family of devices and services that will delight consumers and empower businesses. Already, the acquisition has been approved by Nokia shareholders and by governmental regulatory agencies around the world. Accordingly, the completion of the acquisition marks the first step in bringing these two organizations together as one team. As part of the transaction, Microsoft will honour all existing Nokia customer warranties for existing devices.

Reacting on the new development, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, said that, “Today we welcome the Nokia Devices and Services business to our family. The mobile capabilities and assets they bring will advance our transformation. “Together with our partners, we remain focused on delivering innovation more rapidly in our mobile-first, cloud-first world.” Reporting to Nadella is former Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop, who will serve as executive vice president of the Microsoft Devices Group, overseeing an expanded devices business that includes Lumia smartphones and tablets, Nokia mobile phones, Xbox hardware, Surface, Perceptive Pixel (PPI) products and accessories.

Boy survives five-hour flight in airplane wheel well

A 16-year-old boy was lucky to be alive Monday after surviving a flight from California to Hawaii in the wheel well of an airplane, US media reported. The young stowaway endured freezing temperatures and a lack of oxygen aboard the five-and-a-half hour Hawaiian Airlines flight, which reached an altitude of some 38,000 feet, an FBI official told the Los Angeles Times. “How he survived, I don’t know. It’s a miracle,” FBI spokesman Tom Simon told the daily following the teen’s harrowing journey halfway across the Pacific Ocean.

Security video from the Mineta International Airport in San Jose showed the youth hopping a fence and making his way to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45, where he climbed, undetected, into the wheel well of the aircraft. With oxygen scarce and temperatures well below freezing, Simon said the boy appears to have been unconscious “for pretty much the entire” flight.

The aircraft landed Sunday mid-morning at Maui’s Kahului Airport, and the boy, who did not regain consciousness for another hour, woke up, he hopped down onto the tarmac. Hawaiian Airlines personnel at that point noticed the youth on a airport ramp and notified security, the newspaper wrote. Despite the security breach that allowed him to reach the plane, there was no indication that boy posed a threat to the airline, and he has not been charged with a crime, report said. While it is not unheard of, it is extremely rare to survive a flight in the wheel well of an aircraft. Many who try end up freezing to death or succumbing from a lack of oxygen. Nigeria refs to officiate in world cup by 2018

FIFA referees assistant programme instructor, Lee Kim Chong stated in Abuja that Nigeria referees could get the chance to officiate in their first ever world cup in 2018. Kim Chong said that with the kind of programme the Nigeria referees embarked upon, they are most like to finally make the cut for the list of referees for the world cup. Chong who was the center referee when the Super Eagles won Zambia 2-1 to lift 1994 Nations Cup in Tunisia also pointed that unlike before Nigeria now has more qualified referees who are called to officiate at international competitions.

He said “Nigeria is coming up gradually and has many referees who are fit. This year alone, a good number of them have officiated at CAF organized competitions and they did well. “There are lots of potentials who I have seen myself and I know that before 2018, some of them will be mature to be selected to officiate at the world cup. I have been in Nigeria severally; I was in Aba when I officiated Enyimba match. I have also been involved in some qualifiers involving Nigeria. Chong bemoaned lack of tactical and technological know how by some Nigeria referees but implored them to brace up to square up with challenges ahead.

UK scientists have challenged the idea that the Titanic was unlucky for sailing in a year when there were an exceptional number of icebergs in the North Atlantic.
The ocean liner sank on its maiden voyage 102 years ago, with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
The new analysis found the iceberg risk was high in 1912, but not extreme, as has previously been suggested.
The work by a University of Sheffield team appears in the journal Weather.
The iceberg which sank the Titanic was spotted just before midnight on 14 April 1912, some 500m away. Despite quick action to slow the ship and turn to port, it wasn't enough. About 100m of the hull buckled below the waterline and the liner sank in just two-and-a-half hours.
Reports of unusually bad ice in the North Atlantic started to emerge shortly after the disaster. At the time, US officials told the New York Times that a warm winter had caused "an enormously large crop of icebergs".

In the days leading up to that fateful night, the prevailing winds and temperatures, assisted by ocean currents, had conspired to transport icebergs and sea-ice further south than was normal at that time of year.

All this has led researchers to seek explanations for a supposedly awesome flotilla of ice in the North Atlantic. One US group has proposed that an unusually close approach to Earth by the Mooncaused abnormally high tides in the winter of 1912, which in turn encouraged a greater than usual amount of ice to break off Greenland's glaciers.

In the latest study, Grant Bigg and David Wilton from Sheffield University's department of geography studied data collected by the US Coast Guard and extending back to 1900.
Observational techniques have changed over the years, complicating comparisons. But the researchers say that a good measure of the volume of icebergs is given by the number that passed the circle of latitude at 48 degrees North, across an area of ocean stretching from Newfoundland to about 40 degrees West.
They found that the record showed great variation in the volume of ice from year to year. And although the iceberg flux from Greenland in 1912 was indeed high, with 1,038 icebergs observed crossing the 48th parallel, this number was neither unusual nor unprecedented.
In the surrounding decades, from 1901-1920, there were five years with at least 700 icebergs crossing 48 degrees North. And the coast guard record shows there was a larger flux of icebergs in 1909 than in 1912.
Prof Bigg told BBC News the flux was at the "large end" but "not outstandingly large" for the first 60-70 years of the 20th Century.
Using the coast guard record and other data, the researchers also developed a computer simulation to examine the likely trajectories of icebergs in 1912. Using this model, they were able to trace the likely origin of the iceberg that sank the Titanic to southwest Greenland.
They suggest that it broke off a glacier in that area in early autumn 1911 and started off as a floating hunk measuring roughly 500m long and 300m deep.

Its mass by mid-April 1912 - as predicted by the computer model - agrees very closely with the size of an iceberg bearing a streak of red paint that was photographed by Captain William Squares DeCarteret of the Minia, a ship that joined the search for bodies and wreckage at the site of the disaster.

Sir Alex Ferguson is now a lecturer at Harvard University

The former Manchester Unitedmanager Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to take up a "long-term teaching position" in executive education at Harvard.
The 72-year-old, who left his post as manager at Old Trafford last summer after 26 years in charge, will lecture in the Ivy League University's new programme entitled The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports, starting in May. It comes less than seven months after Ferguson's blueprint for managerial success was included in the October edition of Harvard Business Review.
"I'm delighted to have the opportunity and privilege to contribute to such a respected centre of excellence," Ferguson said.

"The time I have already spent at Harvard has been a stimulating experience and I look forward to developing my relationship and activities with the students, faculty and friends of the Harvard Business School community."

Ferguson conducted a series of interviews with the Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse in 2012, outlining what he believed to be the eight key elements of his old job including "Match the method to the moment" and "Rely on the power of observation".
"We look forward to welcoming Sir Alex Fergusonon the HBS campus to share his remarkable leadership journey, and contribute to our Executive Education participants' ability to make a profound difference in the world," Elberse said.
The programme on The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports will take place from 7-10 May. Manchester United are due to face Hull City in their last game of the season at Old Trafford on 6 May but the club are confident Ferguson's new role will not distract him from his duties as a club director and ambassador.

Samsung Ativ SE, a windows based OS phone is now official. The device running on Windows Phone 8 is a 5-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera, and an unspecified 2.3GHz quad-core processor (most likely the Snapdragon 800) with 2GB of RAM. It also has a 2,600mAh battery, 16GB of storage, and microSD card expansion.

Though Samsung is yet to formally announce the phone, but Verizon has began to take pre-orders. Verizon is even offering to give away one free for any pre-order. The device cost $599.99 (without contract) on their site. Verizon also promises to start shipping as from April 12th.
